  • 326 🧴 Hygiene Kits for Food for Thought - Sunday, 11/9 | 1PM–3PM

πŸͺ₯ Join us in assembling Hygiene Kits filled with essential personal care items for individuals and families supported by Food for Thought. Volunteers will pack items that provide comfort, dignity, and support, helping community members maintain health and well-being.

In 2012, Bob Bell founded Food for Thought Denver after discovering a heartbreaking reality: many of Denver’s schoolchildren were going hungry, particularly on weekends when they couldn’t rely on school meals. Fueled by compassion and determination, Bell, along with volunteers from the Arvada Rotary Club, raised enough donations to begin supplying weekend food bags, known as PowerSacks, to two Denver public schools. Today, Food for Thought Denver has grown into a vital lifeline for the community, serving 75 schools across the Denver area—all while remaining a 100% volunteer-driven organization. Despite many students qualifying for free and reduced breakfast and lunch during the week, weekends often leave them without enough food. Our mission is clear: to close this weekend hunger gap and ensure that no child in our community goes hungry.

  • 463 πŸ§‹ The South Pearl Farmers Market w/ Denver Food Rescue - Sunday, 11/9 | 12:30PM–1:30PM

The South Pearl Farmers market volunteer opportunity is a seasonal partnership with Miller Farms and Rocky Mountain Fresh. We go to the market and "rescue" as much of the unsold produce that we can. Volunteers will be lifting crates of vegetables in and out of vehicles mostly. The food is transported to the warehouse of one of our community partner's The Growhaus to be distributed on Monday.

πŸ›οΈ Denver Food Rescue is somewhat unique in the food access world as we typically do direct distribution. This means we move donated food directly from donors to wherever it's needed. Due to the sheer quantity at this farmers market, and the fact that it happens on Sunday afternoons, this is one of the only donations we accept that requires overnight cold storage. It is also one of our only food pickups where the more hands that are available to help the better. This can be a very physically tiring shift when done by 1 or 2 people but with a larger group the strain is distributed and it's a great opportunity for team building and socializing.

πŸš™ Parking: please park in the surrounding neighborhood and walk to the lot to help.

We pick up food from 3 different locations: Miller Farms, Rocky Mountain Fresh, and Rebel Bread
    - This Is a collaborative shift between DFR staff and as many volunteers are willing to help. The DFR van will be present and will haul the majority of the food. Volunteers with larger vehicles can haul whatever doesn’t fit in the van if they are able*.

Volunteers 18+ must complete this waiver:
Volunteers under 18 are welcome with an adult, but must complete the Under 18 Waiver:

*If you are able to drive produce to The GrowHaus, please park in the parking lot of 1550 S Pearl St. You will have to enter the alley that runs between Pearl and Washington from either the north or south. Florida Ave is to the north and Iowa Ave is to the south.
